We live in a pretty cool city, folks!

I haven't lived here very long, but in the time that I have lived here I have really enjoyed it. This place has a ton of history, there is always something to do, and it's a city with a ton of potential. It's a heck of a fun place to do radio too.

Sometimes I feel that it's good to have someone with fresh eyes, tell you how cool your city is. So that's what I'm here to do...

Shreveport ROCKS!

Movoto put out a list of "49 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Shreveport." Many of the things Lindsay Hilton listed, are things that I have already learned. But there were 10 things that stood out to me that made me say, "wow."

So let's run them down...

The Capital of Louisiana

Before you write me off as an idiot, I know that Shreveport is not the capital of Louisiana. However, it was for a brief moment in history. During the Civil War, Baton Rouge and Opelousas were under Union control. It was during this time that our city help the title of Louisiana's capital.

Elvis Bent The Rules for Shreveport

I now know that no one can resist a hot, hot, hot Southern Maid Donut. Not even Elvis. He sand the jingle for our beloved deep-fried pastries in their 1950s commercial campaign. According to Movoto, it's the only commercial jingle he ever did.

Bigfoot's Hangout

In 2006, the Travel Channel did a documentary titled "Bigfoot." In it, they talked a lot about Caddo Lake. Apparently there are a lot of "Bigfoot sightings" in that area. Anyone want to go camping?

Don't Ask Funeral Directors for a Light

Apparently, there is a law in Shreveport that prohibits funeral directors from giving away matchbooks. I can't find any kind of reason why this is, but I would assume that we are all extremely emotional people who can't be trusted to not burn down a church during a funeral procession.

We Can Fake a Military If Needed

This is insane. Of course, Bossier is home to Barksdale Air Force Base, but back in the day the people of Shreveport created Fort Humbug. It was a "slight-of-hand" military site developed to trick spies into thinking we were loaded with weapons. Cannons were even created out of trees. It worked too.

You Favorite Video Games Started Here

Ever heard of Wolfenstein 3D or Doom? They were conceived in Shreveport. Several programmers worked at Softdisk in the 1980s and 1990s. The technology they developed there would then lead to these games' creation.

It Took Nearly a Century To Get a Brewery

Shreveport-Bossier is home to four or five breweries now, but it wasn't always that way. Great Raft Brewing opened their doors in 2013, almost a century after Prohibition. They were the first brewery to open in Shreveport. They offer free tours every Saturday, so go be a part of history.

Our Boardwalk is Bigger

The Louisiana Boardwalk Outlets is a great place to have a date night. Stroll through the stores, have a bite to eat, catch a movie, and watch the sun set over the river while enjoying ice cream. I love it. And it's actually the largest shopping/dining/entertainment complex in the state of Louisiana.

Vampires Run Amok

The new craze is zombies, but back in the day it was all about vampires. The popular television show True Blood used Shreveport for many of their exterior shots. Bill's house was filmed on the Roseneath Plantation near Shreveport. Also, Lucky Liquor is shown in the opening credits of the show.

We Are an All-American City

Shreveport has some awards on its wall. Three of those are when we were named "All American City." Shreveport held the title in 1953, 1979, and 1999. Roughly every 20 years, so we are actually due for another!

See? Shreveport is a really cool town. What other things will we be known for in the future? What other parts of history will we be a part of? Well, I guess that's up to us to decide, isn't it?
