Several big Christmas Events are happening this weekend. I put together a list of some of our favorite holiday events you might want to check out.

Southern Lights Ice Skating

Summer Grove Baptist Church is bringing “Southern Lights,” an ice skating rink and Christmas Village. The 102′ X 52′ rink is outside in the parking lot of the church on LA-3132 and Jewella. Part of the church has been transformed into a Christmas Village. Youngsters can create wonderful Christmas crafts for free, enjoy bounce houses, and watch a Christmas movie in our Summer Grove Movie Theater. Hours are: December 4 – 22, Monday – Wednesday: 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. and Thursday – Sunday: 5:00 -10:00 p.m.

The Nutcracker

The Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet’s most anticipated production of the year. The 2015 performances of The Nutcracker will be presented at Shreveport’s Riverview Theater on Saturday, December 12th at 7:30pm and Sunday, December 13th at 3:00pm. The Shreveport Symphony Orchestra will accompany the performance.On Sunday, don’t miss the Sugar Plum Fairy Luncheon immediately preceeds the matinee performance.

Christmas in Roseland

Christmas in Roseland is a winter wonderland with more than one million twinkling, bright lights adorned throughout the 26-acre rose park. Visitors will love the eight-foot singing Christmas tree and beautiful, life-size Christmas cards. Kids can take photos with Santa, enjoy a magical train ride, and experience a "snow blizzard." Nightly performers keep the crowds entertained.

Ice Skating at Hirsch Coliseum

The ice rink at Hirsch is now open for public skating on the weekens. Hours are Friday and Saturday 6 pm – 10 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays 2 pm-4 pm.

Admission to George's Pond is $8 and free for children under 2 years old. There are no age or height requirements to ice skate. Skate rentals of all sizes are available for $4. You are also welcome to bring your own skates. Persons 15 and under should be accompanied by an adult. Parking is free. 

NSU Christmas Gala at the Strand

Saturday, December 12th

Northwestern State University’s School of Creative and Performing Arts will stage its most popular holiday production, the annual Christmas Gala, on the stage of Shreveport’s historic Strand Theater. Inspired by New York’s Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, the Christmas Gala showcases the talents of students and faculty in NSU’s world-class music, theater, dance and art programs. There are two show times at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12.

28th Annual Greening of the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum

Shreveport's third grade students decorate Christmas trees with ornaments constructed in their classrooms. These trees are on display for all to enjoy at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum.  Completed in 1939 as one of the New Deal’s Public Works projects, the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum is an architectural jewel, in the ultra modern style of the times. The West Wing gallery displays rotating art exhibits. This fun event will run through December 28th.

Holiday Market in the Red River District

Each Saturday during the month of December, come down to the Red River District under the Texas Street Bridge, and enjoy the Holiday Market. This year a selection of local artists and artisans, as well as small business owners and area nonprofit organizations, will be set up. In addition to the vendors, local food trucks and RRD restaurants will be on hand with special holiday menus, offering visitors a taste of the season. Live entertainment, free activities for the kids, and special holiday happenings will highlight each Saturday, so you'll have a unique experience all market long.

Benton Christmas on the Square

The 16th Annual Benton Christmas on the Square Festival celebrates the holidays in the charming town of Benton, La. This annual festival is in an open-air venue that provides traditional, family-oriented activities such as food, entertainment, arts and crafts, parades and much more. Throughout the day visitors and groups can check out the food and craft vendors, live musical and dance performances, children's activities, and get pictures with Santa Claus. The parade rolls at 3 p.m. Free to the public. Free parking is available at the Benton Courthouse. The shuttle service runs every 15 minutes to and from the festival site.

Nighttime Battlefield Tour

"Silent Night: Christmas 1865"  A Nighttime Battlefield Tour at the Mansfield Historic Site in Mansfield, Louisiana 6-8pm. December 12th.

Cowboy Christmas

The 2nd Annual Cowboy Christmas event will be held on Saturday, December 19 at Cash Point Event Center in Elm Grove, La. and will feature a live Nativity scene, food, entertainment, dancing, contests and more. For more information call 318-747-9595. The cost is $5.

Shreveport Symphony’s Holiday Pops

The Shreveport Symphony's Holiday Pops: Stars on Stage will be held 7:30 p.m., Saturday, December 19 at the RiverView Theater in Shreveport, and 6 p.m., Sunday, December 20 at Cypress Baptist Church in Benton. Doug LaBrecque will bring his inimitable style to favorite songs of the season. Group sales are available.

Logan Mansion Holiday Tour

The Logan Mansion is beautiful antebellum home that will be all decked out for Christmas. Visitors will get an up close and personal tour of the 1897 Queen Ann Victorian home on December 20th. It's located at 725 Austin Place. The tour cost is $10 per person.

Christmas Breakfast for Downtown Friends

A Christmas morning breakfast for homeless folks in downtown Shreveport. Several volunteers have come together to organize this special event. If you would like to help, they still need some small gifts to hand out to the folks. Things like socks, t-shirts, blankets, snack packs, and other items are needed. This event is Christmas morning at 9am at the Corner of Austen Place and Texas Street.
