Before Ryan Seacrest announced the ‘American Idol‘ winner tonight (May 23), the contestants of Season 11 paid tribute to recently deceased music icon Robin Gibb. The Bee Gees member sadly passed away on May 20, 2012, due to complications from cancer. He was 62 years old.

The group of guys from the Top 12, which included DeAndre Brackensick, Colton Dixon and Joshua Ledet, first paid homage to the late great Bee Gees vocalist. The ‘Idol’ guys were seated on stools on a stark black stage as pictures of the Bee Gees during their heyday projected across massive screens. It was a very somber yet very uplifting tribute.

They sang a medley of ‘Words,’ where Brackensick busted out a serious Bee Gees-worthy falsetto for ‘How Can You Mend a Broken Heart’ and ‘To Love Somebody.’ Ledet took the lead on the latter, giving an emotive performance that had some gospel fury worked into it. All of the guys harmonized beautifully, but believe us, they couldn’t hold a candle to the Gibb brothers.

It’s nice that the people at Fox wanted to pay tribute to Gibb, but honestly, what about Donna Summer? The Queen of Disco tragically died on May 17, 2012, after losing her battle with lung cancer.
