Jason Bateman on ‘Arrested Development’ Murder-Mystery, Likely Season 6

Arrested Development Season 5 Bateman Murder Trump

Almost five years will have passed when Arrested Development Season 5 picks up, yet the Bluths remain as topical as ever. Jason Bateman re-affirms that Season 5 will take the form of a murder-mystery with timely Trump parallels, but not an end to the story.

The apparent demise of Liza Minnelli’s Lucille 2 was always meant to drive Season 5, with creator Mitch Hurwitz previously hoping to capitalize on Making a Murderer timeliness. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, upcoming Ozark star Bateman affirmed that Season 5 (which starts filming in two weeks) would keep the mystery front and center:

The central spine of that story of is the death of Liza Minnelli’s character, and a bit of whodunit, who may have done it, who had something to do with it. That’s sort of a central thread around which [creator Mitch Hurwitz] is going to braid in all the colorful plot complications that he knows how to do.

And while greater work was put into keeping the cast together for Season 5, there’s no reason the next run would end the series. As Bateman explains, a sixth season (or perhaps a movie) will likely come together in another few years:

The first act [Mitch Hurwitz envisioned] was done on the first batch of Netflix episodes, and we’re about to do now the second act of that story, and then the act third act presumably will be done if we can all get it together at a later date, maybe in another few years.

Not enough? Bateman also told The Daily Beast that Season 5 was likely to lean into those Trump parallels that have swirled since the 2015 campaign announcement, and the eerie similarity with Season 4 stories:

None of that is lost on [creator] Mitch Hurwitz. He’s aware of all of that stuff. And he and his writing staff have been in a cave for the last two or three months crafting these episodes, and they’re going to lean into a lot of that [Trump] stuff for sure. They can’t wait.

Elsewhere of Arrested Development Season 5, the full cast of Bateman, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter, Tony Hale, Portia de Rossi, David Cross and Alia Shawkat will return, spending “much more” time together. That said, we’ve heard no update on reports of a prequel format that was said to minimize cast commitment.

We’ll likely learn more as shooting picks up in the next few weeks, so stay tuned.
