Ariana Grande's 'Break Free' has been another blockbuster single for the 21-year-old singer, having reached the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

But had things gone differently during the song's production, it very well could have been Austin Mahone receiving the recognition.

In an interview with Tiger Beat, Mahone dropped the surprising story that he actually passed on 'Break Free' when it was first offered to him.

“Actually, Ariana’s new song that just came out was supposed to be mine like a year ago,” he said. “‘Break Free,’ like they sent it to me and I was supposed to record it, but I never did.”

'Break Free' was written by Savan Kotecha, Zedd and Max Martin. Zedd told KIIS-FM (via KBGO) in May that he always wanted to work with Grande after he heard her vocals for the first time at a label showcase.

"I was backstage and I heard someone sing," he revealed. "And I didn't know who it was, and I just said, 'I want to make a song with whoever is singing right now.' I didn't know who it was, and it turned out being her. And luckily, now there's a song!"

It's probably serendipitous that 'Break Free' ended up on Grande's album, because we can't picture the song being sung now by anyone other than her!
