Beyonce closed out the 2014 MTV Music Video Awards with a performance that will perhaps rival her 2013 Super Bowl halftime show as one of her greatest acts on live TV.

The 32-year-old singer was honored tonight as the recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award,  MTV's version of the lifetime achievement award for the VMAs. But instead of running through her greatest hits like last year's recipient, Justin Timberlake, she performed a medley of songs from her latest album, 'Beyonce.'

Her self-titled 'Beyonce' album broke all the conventional rules in regards to traditional music marketing when she surprise dropped the album on Dec. 13, 2013, on iTunes. Beyonce's daring stunt ended up working in her favor, as it sold over 430,000 copies in its first 24 hours alone. The album also made several critics' best of 2013 year-end lists.

Thus, it was fitting that Bey honored the album which helped her status as an artist reach new highs.

Beyonce sang and danced to 14 songs during her performance, each with a different set, lighting and dance moves like only a seasoned pro like her could do. She opened with 'Mine' before getting into 'Haunted,' 'Pretty Hurts,' 'No Angel,' 'Jealous,' 'Blow,' 'Drunk in Love,' 'Rocket,' 'Partition,' 'Superpower,' 'Flawless,' 'Yonce,' 'Blue' and 'XO.'

Perhaps the most emotional moment of the entire evening was when Beyonce sang 'Blue' with a photo slideshow of her daughter, Blue Ivy, in the background and with Blue and husband Jay Z sitting in the audience.

When Beyonce's performance was finished, Jay Z got on stage to deliver the award to a tearful Beyonce, who declared her love for her husband, daughter and her fans.

The VMAs have honored many great people over the years. But it was moments like tonight that define an artist versus a legend.
