Blake Shelton Pens ‘Friends’ for ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ [LISTEN]

Blake Shelton voices a country-boy pig in the upcoming The Angry Birds Movie, and he's also penned a song for the film -- an uptempo, country-fied track called "Friends."

Banjo, mouth harp and fiddle are all present in Shelton's movie soundtrack contribution, which finds its narrator musing about how an unlikely friendship got him through some hard times.

"Just some roughed-up desperadoes / Hanging tough through thick and thin / Kicking up dust wherever we go," Shelton sings in the song's chorus. "I can see that you and me are gonna be friends / To the end, you and me are gonna be friends."

The Angry Birds Movie -- a combined effort between Sony Pictures and Rovio Entertainment, the developer of the film's titular smartphone game, in which players sling birds at pigs -- will act as “the origin story for how that ­conflict came to exist between birds and little green piggies,” per producer John Cohen.

“I can write things about myself and my life,” Shelton reflects of penning "Friends." “But I don’t have a whole lot of experience being shot out of a slingshot at pigs.”

Of voicing his character, Earl, the The Voice coach says, “They kept saying, ‘More country!’ I felt like I was doing a voice-over for Dukes of Hazzard.”

The Angry Birds Movie's soundtrack, on which "Friends" appears, is set for release on May 6; it is available for pre-order now via iTunes. The movie itself is scheduled to hit theaters on May 20; it also feature the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Maya Rudolph, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad, Danny McBride and more.
