Rik Mayall, best known for starring on the cult TV series "The Young Ones" and in the 1991 film "Drop Dead Fred", died Monday at his London home at the age of 56.

London's Metropolitan Police said that officials were called to the comedian's home by the ambulance service, but found no signs of foul play. The cause of death is as yet unknown.

Mayall was injured in a 1998 ATV accident which left him comatose and on life support for several days. "The main difference between now and before my accident is I'm just very glad to be alive," he said of the accident last year. "Other people get moody in their 40s and 50s — men get the male menopause. I missed the whole thing. I was just really happy."
