Billy Magnussen Cast in Live-Action ‘Aladdin’ as a New Character

Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin is probably going to be a little longer than the animated version, so there’s plenty of space to add in a character or a subplot or two. Which seems to be why Billy Magnussen has just been added to the cast, as mystery newcomer “Prince Anders.”

‘The Man Who Invented Christmas’ Trailer: Dan Stevens Is Bewigged Yet Again as Charles Dickens

Christmas has been around for hundreds of years, but our version of Christmas began with a very small novel, written by a probably average height man. Charles Dickens is credited with coming up with the very Christmas-ness of Christmas, that holiday spirit that drives people to light candles and gather family and drape pine branches and holly berries all over their furniture. With A Christmas Carol, Dickens revolutionized our portrayal of the holiday season, an evolution that will be dramatized by Dan Stevens and Dan Stevens’ wig in The Man Who Invented Christmas.

Colin Trevorrow Is No Longer Directing ‘Star Wars: Episode 9’

In news that seemed somewhat inevitable from Day One, Colin Trevorrow has reportedly exited Star Wars: Episode IX. Trevorrow’s departure comes after a bumpy year for the director, whose latest film, The Book of Henry, was met with largely negative reviews (to say the least). It also comes just a few months after Lucasfilm parted ways with directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller, replacing them with Ron Howard, who is currently completing production on the untitled Han Solo spinoff.

William Friedkin Describes His ‘Terrifying’ ‘Devil and Father Amorth’ Shoot

For months now, cinephiles have been anxiously anticipating the release of William Friedkin’s documentary The Devil and Father Amorth, the documentation of a real-life exorcism by the man whose film The Exorcist made the practice (in)famous. Last December, Friedkin wrote an op-ed piece in Vanity Fair detailing some of the things he had seen happen during the exorcism of Rosa, an Italian woman who was undergoing her ninth exorcism with Father Amorth. Skeptic or not, the possibility of a true crime angle to the practice of exorcisms  —  one that explores the science and psychology of the practice, bookended by some shocking footage of the exorcism itself  —  was a really hard thing to pass up.

‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Launches Gorilla-Sized Oscar Campaign

At the Oscars, genre films usually dominate the special effects categories, sometimes getting a nod or a win for a certain actor or director. Mad Max: Fury Road was the last big genre pic to get in the running for Best Picture, receiving tons of nominations after it awed audiences and critics back in 2015. This year’s race is set to be mighty interesting, as Wonder Woman is rumored to be stirring up an Oscar campaign, and a bunch of genre material by prestige directors is debuting within the next few months during fall film festival season. War for the Planet of the Apes is setting itself up as an unlikely contender, officially launching its huge Oscar campaign today.

Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves Reuniting for Rom-Com ‘Destination Wedding’

Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder are kind of the alt version of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet: you know they’re not together, but they’ve appeared as co-stars often enough that you kinda ship them, just a little bit. If that’s you, good news: Reeves and Ryder, last seen together in Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly, are reuniting once again for romantic comedy Destination Wedding.
