Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has checked into a mental health facility to "proactively" treat her bipolar condition, according to her spokeswoman.

Zeta-Jones' publicist, Sarah Fuller, sent an e-mail to the Associated Press Monday saying that the actress "is committed to periodic care in order to manage her health in an optimum manner."

The Oscar-winning actress has been treated before for her condition, which is known as Bipolar II, Symptoms include mood swings and depressive episodes, and is usually treated with medication and psychotherapy.

Zeta-Jones has most recently been seen in such movies as "Rock of Ages", "Playing for Keeps" and "Side Effects".
