Say goodbye to earthquake sloths, mutant vultures and James Wolk – CBS’ Zoo is officially closing the gates. The fan-favorite sci-fi drama based on James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge’s novel has been canceled after three bonkers seasons, in spite of its profitable Netflix arrangement.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news, adding that Zoo sustained itself with a similar Netflix deal as CBS’ Under the Dome, so as to stream the network’s less-profitable summer series shortly after their TV debuts. Zoo Season 3 suffered a two million viewer drop-off from the prior season, hitting a notable low with the September Season 3 finale.

Having first gone to series in 2014, Zoo became the longest-running CBS summer series, prior to its cancellation. The show’s renewal prospects were dimmed somewhat by the Season 2 order for fellow summer series Salvation, which struck a streaming deal with Amazon for more immediate financial viability. Zoo previously starred Mad Men favorite James Wolk, Game of Thrones alum Nonso Anozie, House of Cards’ Kristen Connolly, Revolution alum Billy Burke, and subsequent season additions Alyssa Diaz, Josh Salatin and Gracie Dzienny.

It’s unlikely any other network might ride to Zoo’s rescue, but had the show’s three seasons exhausted the potential of Patterson’s original concept?
