Did Justin Bieber Throw Shade At Shawn Mendes?

What really happened during that Justin Bieber interview?

Bieber was a guest recently on WPLJ/New York's "Frankie Tonight" show when the subject of fellow singer Shawn Mendes came up. Mendes' debut album, Handwritten, went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart, but the Biebs didn't seem all that impressed.

When asked if he had any advice for the up-and-coming singer, Bieber responded, "Who's Shawn Mendes?"

After hearing what the 17-year-old YouTube and Vine sensation's recent accomplishments, Bieber simply said, "Good for him."

It may have all come from an interview Mendes gave the Toronto Sun back in April where he said he didn't want to be known as "the next Justin Bieber."

"[Justin's] stuff and style are totally different," he added. "When I play shows it's just me and the guitar, so it's kind of unique. I mean, I really look up to Ed Sheeran. I really look up to Bruno Mars, and yeah, Justin's great too."

When it was pointed out that both singers are from the same region of Canada (Southern Ontario), Bieber replied, “No, I don’t know him, but I will check him out. For sure.”

So, was Justin throwing shade at a potential rival, or is Shawn Mendes' name so new that it just didn't show up on the Biebs' radar? We'll let you make that call.
