At HRC’s inaugural Time to THRIVE Conference for LGBT teens, which was held in Las Vegas on Valentine’s Day, ‘Juno’ star Ellen Page came out as gay.
With her voice shaky and emotional, Page, 26, delivered a moving, 10-minute speech that touched on topics of love and outward appearance.
Here I am, an actress, representing, at least in some sense, an industry that places crushing standards on all of us, not just young people, but everyone, standards of beauty, of a good life, of success. Standards that I hate to admit affected me…You have ideas planted in your head, thoughts you never had before, that tell you how you have to act, how you have to dress and who you have to be. I have been trying to push back, to be authentic, to follow my heart but it can be hard.
Page next spoke about being photographed wearing sweats to the gym and being featured in an online post, with the writer asking why a petite beauty dresses like a massive man. This led into her big reveal, which comes at the 5:22 mark of the video.
She declared, “I am here today because I am gay” to a standing ovation and round of applause. Page, who won our hearts as a pregnant teen in her breakout role of Juno, appeared to be struggling to hold back her emotions. She let out a sigh of relief and a “whew,” and thanked the audience.
Page then explained why she chose to reveal her orientation.
Because maybe I can make a difference and help others have an easier and more hopeful time, regardless for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility. I also do it selfishly because I am tired of hiding and of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered. My mental health suffered and my relationships suffered.
We applaud Page for her bravery and her decision to come out for herself and for others.
