The problem with buying gifts for someone important in your life is that at some point, you start to run out of ideas.  This does not mean, in any way, that you don't care about them.  In fact, it may mean the opposite.  If you didn't care, you could just get a gift card or nothing at all.  After a few Christmases, it may become increasingly difficult to achieve that "wow" factor.
