The National Weather Service in Shreveport is reporting a "significant and potentially life-threatening flash flood event" going on this morning across much of east Texas and northwest Louisiana.

We're looking at widespread flash flooding across much of the region due to heavy rainfall that's developed along the I-20 corridor. It's expected to gradually shift east through the afternoon.

The NWS is expecting widespread rainfall totals of three-to-five inches, with isolated amounts nearing eight inches. The Red River is dangerously close to flood stage, and there are warnings for Bayou Dorcheat and Bodcau Bayou.

Driving conditions have been hazardous for most of the morning. You're urged to give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination, and keep a safe following distance.

Here are some other tips we've received from Louisiana DOTD:

Motorists should avoid driving into standing or running water.

Drivers should follow these tips when driving during and after a rainfall event:

• slow down, be attentive, and avoid driving distracted.
• allow for extra driving time and additional room between vehicles.
• reduce speeds when visibility is low.

As always, DOTD reminds motorists to buckle up and refrain from drinking and driving.
