Former President Jimmy Carter revealed Tuesday that after recent surgery, an unspecified cancer was found to have spread into other parts of his body.

"Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body," Carter said in a statement. "I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week."

His family has had a history of pancreatic cancer, his father, two sisters and his brother having died of the disease. His mother also suffered from pancreatic cancer.

Carter served as President from 1977 to 1981, and is one of five living ex-presidents.
