We had a great time hanging out at DiamondJacks Casino for Wet! The Pool Party this weekend. Not only did we get to lounge around by a pool and play some great tunes, but we gave away some amazing prizes, including a trip to Las Vegas to see Zedd!

This year’s Sasquatch! Music Festival kicked off with a bang! Well … OK, the weather wasn’t exactly cooperative, as it rained on Friday and most of Monday, but that didn’t stop thousands upon thousands of concertgoers from enjoying four days (May 24-27) of awesome music at the Gorge Amphitheater, one of the most beautiful venues in the country.

Among the acts on hand were Vampire Weekend, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Mumford and Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and the the recently reunited Postal Service, who closed things out.

Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready also made a surprise appearance on Monday, performing the national anthem on his Fender, a la Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. Below is a photo recap of this year’s festivities.

Angelina Masiki is a K945 VIP and she is proof positive that it pays to be a K945 VIP! She won a three-night stay in New Orleans along with a three-day pass to Jazz Fest to see Maroon 5 for both she and her husband. They also received his and her iPad minis courtesy of Interscope Records!

Angelina said they had a great time and that the trip was a quasi-honeymoon for she and her man! It was wet and rainy, but the Quarter was hopping and the music was incredible.

The traffic lights at the intersection of Bert Kouns Industrial Loop and Youree Drive in Shreveport near IHOP and Walmart were knocked down by an 18-wheeler into the middle of the busy intersection Tuesday afternoon around 3 p.m.

The lights fell near IHOP and Walmart, cutting off one end of the street from the other.

We received the below pictures from a 710 KEEL listener, Leigh Anne Jones,  who also told us that at least one car appeared to have metal on top of it. No injuries have been reported so far.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the intersection of Bert Kouns and Youree Drive for the next several hours while city work crews scramble to restore a traffic signal downed by an 18-wheeler.

The repair work required is extensive and the intersection has been closed to traffic in all directions. There is no immediate estimate for how long the repairs will take but commuters should plan to use alternate routes such as East Kings Highway or Millicent Way until further notice.

Despite some recent bad press, turns out John Mayer is actually a stand-up guy. The singer made a surprise visit to Shreveport Wednesday on his way to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival to help build a home for a local Army veteran.

Shreveport’s The Fuller Center is spearheading the noble home-building project, which is taking place in Shreveport’s Stoner Hill neighborhood. Crews are building four houses right now, but the area will eventually boast 10 homes for veterans.

Cliff Malone, an Army veteran, is the proud new owner of the house Mayer helped put the finishing touches on. You can hear the Grammy Award-winning singer chatting with the grateful vet in the video.

“You know I’m gonna tell people I know you now,” joked Malone. Laughing, Mayer replied: “That’s what you need to do.”

Just like clock work, each Spring and each Fall, eventers from around the country descend on Holly Hill Farm in Benton for the Holly Hill Horse Trials which will take place this weekend. They start tomorrow (Friday) and run through Sunday. Holly Hill plays host to the only two recognized events in the entire state of Louisiana. Over 300 horse and rider teams are expected to participate at this weekend’s event and you’ll find tons of vendors and concessions on site. Plus, it’s free to attend! I’ll be working Saturday as a dressage scribe for judge Bill Woods. I’m looking forward to learning a LOT! I’ve volunteered the last several trials as a jump judge and had big fun!

BTW, we have two local riders (that I know of) who are ranked nationally. Myself, along with several other of her students, are trying to help raise money to advance local hopeful Julie Norman to Rolex 2014. Won’t you consider a donation or perhaps come buy a raffle ticket (or 20) this weekend? While you’re there, cheer on our other hometown hopeful Sydney Conley Elliot! I can’t even describe how cool it would be to have two riders represent our great state!

What Are Horse Trials?

Horse Trials are also called Eventing. A full phase event is called a Three Day Event (like in the Olympics) because it takes place over three days; Dressage the first day, Cross-Country (Speed & Endurance) phase next, and Stadium Jumping on the last day. Horse Trials are scaled down versions which take place over one or two days. Holly Hill Horse Trials is a two day competition for Beginner Novice, Novice, Training, Preliminary, and Intermediate levels. As the levels progress the jumps are correspondingly higher, wider and more difficult, and the speeds are faster.

Success in this sport requires horse and rider to develop as a team. They must be adaptable, bold and athletic. Eventers take pride in developing their horses’ fitness level and they incorporate a training schedule that will allow them to achieve competency in all three disciplines.

Dressage

The dressage test consists of a series of movements performed in an arena and judged subjectively. Precision, smoothness and obedience must be demonstrated to show the horse’s gymnastic development through progressive levels of skill. A percentage score is converted to penalties which are carried forward to the next phase.

Cross-Country

This discipline is considered to be the most exciting part of eventing. Holly Hill Horse Trials has cross-country courses for the following levels: Intermediate, Preliminary, Training, Novice, and Beginner Novice. Cross-country is ridden over solid obstacles and varied terrain at an optimum speed assigned for each level. Heights for obstacles range depending on level. Penalties are assessed for horse refusals, run-outs, falls and being over optimum time. Also a rider can receive penalties for being too fast.

Show Jumping

This phase consists of a simple stadium jumping course which demonstrates that the horse is capable of an obedient and supple effort after a day of exhilarating cross-country. And yes, the horses do know the difference between a solid and unfixed fence rail! Penalties are assessed for refusals, knock-downs, falls and being over the time limit.

At the end of the competition, the rider with the fewest combined penalties is the winner.

This is almost as bad as the two servers who got into a fight a few weeks ago at Logan’s in Bossier, but this story has an edge of sadness to it, too. Generally, I like stupid criminal stories, but when you pick on the young or the old, you deserve everything you get!

This story happened in Princeton, LA — my neck of the woods! Shame on you, Alyson Jones!

 GRANDDAUGHTER SPENDS MORE THAN $100K WITH GRANNY’S IDENTITY

Bossier Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Princeton woman for stealing the identity of her live-in grandmother and purchasing more than $100,000 in vehicles, computers and home improvements without her grandmother’s permission or knowledge.

Alyson D. Jones, 35, of the 280 block of Canvas Back in Princeton, was arrested Friday afternoon following a four-month investigation by the Bossier Financial Crimes Task Force that found Jones had swindled her 84-year-old grandmother of all her finances since 2009.

Detectives determined the grandmother, who suffers from dementia and bad eyesight, moved in with her granddaughter in Princeton in July 2009 from North Carolina.  In October 2012, the grandmother moved back to North Carolina to live with another relative, and in the process of getting the grandmother’s finances in order and addresses changed, that relative discovered that the grandmother had numerous credit cards opened in her name and were charged to the limit.  The relative also found that bank statements in the grandmother’s name showed she did not have any money and all of her savings had been depleted.

Bossier detectives began their investigation and discovered that Jones had opened four credit card accounts in her grandmother’s name.  Jones also used her grandmother’s identity to purchase a truck, minivan, motorcycle, computers, a metal garage, appliances and sod for the yard.  Jones also purchased everyday items such as groceries, household purchases and vet bills, all with her grandmother’s identity.

For three years, Jones also spent her grandmother’s Social Security benefit of nearly $1,500 each month, and she withdrew funds from her grandmother’s annuity policy, all without her grandmother’s permission and totaling nearly $60,000 alone.

On Friday, detectives seized the items that were purchased by Jones in whole or part by her grandmother’s money, including the double-wide trailer, Kia Sedona, Chevrolet Silverado, Harley Davidson and bank accounts.  Detectives also seized currency found in the glovebox of the minivan, which was a collection of the grandmother’s late husband, which included numerous $2 bills and other paper money from the 1920s and 1930s.

Jones admitted to detectives she took advantage of her grandmother, but denied she was stealing from her.  She was charged with eight counts of money laundering, four counts of identity theft, 11 counts of felony theft and one count of racketeering.  She was transported to the Bossier Maximum Security Facility where she was booked with a $130,000 bond.

Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington reminds everyone how serious a crime like identity theft can be, especially when it affects the elderly.

“Protecting all citizens from crime is my top priority, but when it comes to senior citizens and even our young people, I’m a bit more sensitive that justice is served.  Identity theft is a very unfortunate crime, and if you feel you’ve been a victim or know someone who has, please don’t hesitate to contact your Sheriff’s Office or law enforcement agency.”

What looked to be the start of a dreary day for Easter on the Bayou turned out to be a great day full of fun. There were many colorful, candy-filled eggs scattered throughout the woods for the children to hunt, good food and other fun activities for the families to enjoy.

The gates opened about 8 a.m. and the Easter egg hunting and activities began at 10. Children enjoyed bouncy houses, inflatable slides, face painting booths and an inflatable rock climbing wall. Vendors such as McAlister’s and Newk’s Restaurants, as well as the event sponsor, MetroPCS, had booths set up down by the picnic area where some families enjoyed lunch down by the water. Overall, a good time was had by all.

Both Sydney Conley Elliot and Julie Norman (my personal trainer!) are successfully campaigning, and you never know, one or both of them could end up on the next Olympic team for the US. Chronicle of the Horse posted an extensive article yesterday regarding Sydney and the Red Hills Horse Trials in Florida where she is competing this weekend. Julie has been receiving quite a bit of press herself as she finished 2nd at Rocking Horse running Advanced… just behind Buck Davidson. Julie is also currently ranked 15th on the overall leader board for 2013. Sydney is ranked as well and we look forward to both of these fine ladies going all the way to the top!

[UPDATE] Beyonce’s publicist has won at least one battle. She successfully convinced media photo service Getty Images this week to remove six “unflattering” photos of Beyoncé from its library.

[ORIGINAL STORY] We’ve all been the subject of unflattering pictures. And usually, we deal with it. Not Beyoncé. The singer’s publicist has reportedly asked a website to remove some photos snapped of the singer during her Super Bowl 47 halftime performance.

According to Gawker, Beyoncé’s publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure of Schure Media, sent the following note to Buzzfeed about the inclusion of six specific photos the website featured in a post that collected the singer’s “fiercest” moments from her halftime performance at Super Bowl 47 this past Sunday:

Thanks for taking my call. As discussed, there are some unflattering photos on your current feed that we are respectfully asking you to change. I am certain that you will be able to find some better photos.
