Gotye‘s dissatisfaction with the ‘Glee’ cover of ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ may have been blown out of proportion. The singer said at a private performance on Monday that the media misinterpreted his remarks and he actually believes the show’s remake was “clever.”

The Hollywood Reporter covered the private show, where Gotye told long-forgotten former MTV VJ Kennedy and a crowd of less than 100 that when he called the ‘Glee’ cover “dinky and wrong,” it wasn’t necessarily an insult. “This xylophone hook in my song — it’s kind of dinky,” he explained. “Not just in the cover version, but the original song.”

Gotye recorded ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ with female singer Kimbra, while the ‘Glee’ version was performed by actor Darren Criss and guest star Matt Bomer, who played warring brothers. Gotye said yesterday, “I thought it was really clever to transpose the song to two guys … It was a great idea.” He said he wasn’t sure how his comments got mistakenly twisted into “the ‘Glee’ cover I hated and Darren Criss is an a–hole.”

The singer’s latest remarks stand in contrast to what he said over the weekend, when he claimed, “They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals, but the vocals were that pop ‘Glee’ style, ultra dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box.”
