For the first time in a year, Green Day got together for a jam session, and to celebrate the occasion the band posted a picture of the gathering on their Instagram account. You can check out the photo above, featuring frontman Billie Joe Armstrong sporting a king's crown.

Why has it been so long between jam sessions for the group? Well, 2014 was a year of ups and downs for Green Day. In December it was announced that the band would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 2015, but it was also revealed that their touring guitarist Jason White was diagnosed with tonsil cancer. Earlier in the year, drummer Tre Cool happily tied-the-knot, but in contrast, bassist Mike Dirnt revealed his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Late last year, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong spoke with Rolling Stone about everything going on within their group. “I think of next year as us kind of regrouping and getting together more,” Armstrong said. “I want to make sure that everyone’s head is in the right place and wants to start doing it again. I think this is a great time for us to reflect. With the Hall of Fame here, we can look back with gratitude and reflect with gratitude without feeling like it’s some nostalgic trip.”

He went on, “We’ve always kept moving forward, no matter what. That’s exhausting. Also, Mike’s wife is just recovering from breast cancer. And Jason White is going through the same battle right now. We need to be there for each other in a different way rather than standing next to each other and playing really loud.”

It could be that Green Day got together for the jam session in preparation for a performance at the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. On April 18, Green Day, alongside Joan Jett, Stevie Ray Vaughan and more, will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2015.
