Shreveport firefighters have labeled two house fires, one late last night and another this afternoon, as suspicious in nature.

Last night, a fire in the 2600 block of Darien Street seriously damaged a two-story house and a two-story garage behind it. No utilities were connected to either structure. Nobody was injured and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters are also looking into an afternoon fire in the 1800 block of Laurel Street. Fire Department spokesman Scott Wolverton tells KEEL News that fire crews arrived to find a three-story building, which used to be a church, engulfed in flames.

Crews got the fire out pretty quickly. They had it under control just before 3 p.m. Again, no working utilities were connected to the building.

Wolverton says investigators are trying to determine the causes of both fires, but he tells me it's possible people got into the vacant buildings trying to find a place to stay warm.
