It all starts with a sniffle or a groan that echos down the hall. You hear the cough. You hear the grunts. You know what is about to happen. He is getting sick. Soon he will call for you. He is weak, and can't function without your help. He has a cold.

This morning I got the call. The call all women know too well. He is at home suffering. He is in pain. His throat is itchy. His head spins when he sits up. He is wondering when I will be home to take care of him.

When Tucker and I first moved in together, I didn't know what to do when he got sick. I have taken care of my mother or helped with my step dad when they got sick, but I have never had to help the boyfriend. I looked to the internet for direction and tips. Now, I am here for you so that you may have this knowledge when you get the call.

  • Tip 1: Always Buy The Drowsy Medicine!

He will sleep away all of his pain and won't bother you too much.

  • Tip 2: Summon All Of The Patience From Your Ancestors.

Light a few candles and saw a few prayers. He will revert to a child-like state that will require you to be on call at the drop of the dime to care for his every need. He will be semi-lucid, tired, and whiny. I suggest stocking up on chicken noodle soup, PB&J, and Sunny D to combat the child within him.

  • Tip 3: Stock Up On Tissues And Cough Drops

He is going to need tissues. Get them in bulk if you have to, and you might as well go ahead and buy him his own trash can. Make sure you check multiple of times that you get the right cough drops, because you know he will bug you again and again about not getting his favorite. He will then not eat the cough drops you have originally bought, prolonging the sickness he has obtained. Therefore, prolonging your suffering as well.

  • Tip 4: All The Remotes Need To Be In Arms Reach

Instead of him calling you every other second to retrieve the remote for the TV, or the Xbox just go ahead and create a circle around him of controllers. Better yet, velcro all the remotes to the side of the table or night stand so he has no excuse of them mysteriously vanishing in his sickness nest.

  • Tip 5: Remember How Much You Love Him

Don't forget that he is still your boyfriend/ husband. He still loves you. You still love him. He might be a big old baby right now, but he will appreciate everything you do for him in his time of need. He will now owe you big time.

If you take all these tips to heart, you will survive this dark time ahead of you.
