If you're your own worst critic, ready your hand for a long-awaited pat on the back: Jess Glynne's delivered a "Don't be so Hard on Yourself" video, and it'll have you wrapping your arms around your own body in no time.

The clip, which follows the song's July 2 release, follows a young drummer who attempts to reconnect with the spirit of his late father by following in the man's footsteps and forging a path in music. The problem is, as he's the new kid in town, his school's existing drum line has no interest in welcoming him to the group, and after a period of tension, the performers go as far as to give their classmate a black-and-blue to drive the point across.

"I came here with a broken heart that no one else could see / I drew a smile on my face til they were over me / The wounds heal and tears dry and cracks they don’t show / So don’t be so hard on yourself, no," Glynne, who appears in the story's background, pleads over an uplifting disco arrangement as the aspiring artist presses on in his quest to achieve percussion-greatness.

Finally, the character gathers enough gall to demand the group's attention with a set his adversaries simply can't ignore, and where he was previously the enemy, he's suddenly the hero.

I Cry When I Laugh, Glynne's debut album, is scheduled for release on August 21 and also features singles “Right Here” and “Hold my Hand.”
