Even with Luke Cage just over a week away, fans are anxious to pick up the world left behind by Marvel’s Jessica Jones. We’ll see the character again in The Defenders, but it seems Season 2 is at least halfway complete in the writers’ room, while showrunner Melissa Rosenberg teases Jessica’s enduring trauma beyond Kilgrave.

Esquire had a chance to catch up with Rosenberg for an update on Season 2 of Marvel’s most foul-mouthed Defender, revealing “As of August, Rosenberg and her writers are midway through the writing process on Season Two.” The intermediate premieres of Luke Cage and The Defenders left more time than usual to plot out the season, as Rosenberg is “only as involved [with The Defenders] as they need me to be.”

As to what we can expect from Jessica’s post-Kilgrave recovery, Rosenberg likened it to her work with Dexter. No, in a good way!

I learned from working on Dexter that you can advance the character, but you never want to cure the character. With Dexter, the moment he felt guilt or accepted that he was ‘bad,’ the show’s over. He’s no longer a sociopath. The equivalent for us would be if Jessica somehow recovered from the damage that had been done to her. People don’t just heal, you don’t go through that just to say, ‘Oh, he got arrested, he’s in jail, I’m OK now.’ That trauma is a huge part of who she is now.

Previously, it was also announced that The Returned, True Blood and Supernatural alum Raelle Tucker had joined Jessica Jones for Season 2, writing to fill the void left by former executive producer Liz Friedman.

The report notes 2017 as the earliest possible Season 2 premiere date, but Netflix was last reported to be sticking to two Marvel series a year, placing Jessica Jones’ solo return in 2018. We’ve heard rumblings of a few villains, but what should we expect from the second shot?
