Mini diva Jessica Sanchez was born in 1995, so she chose ‘Turn the Beat Around’ by Gloria Estefan on tonight’s episode of ‘American Idol,’ where the hopefuls were allowed to perform a song from the year in which they were born. Sanchez is 16-years-young, but she sings like a seasoned diva with years of experience under her belt.

Tonight, J San  – sorry, we had to give her a cool, abbreviated name, like any diva of her stature deserves — glittered on stage. Literally. Or “glitterally!” She wore a pair of fashion-forward, high-waisted, silver-sequined pants which had J. Lo and Steven Tyler drooling. She paired ‘em with a white sleeveless top and belt, while her hair was blown sleek and straight. While Sanchez looked like a polished and put together adult, she strayed from what she does best: the big ballad. It was a risk to go uptempo and sing something beat-driven, so she struggled to keep up with the syncopation. The song wasn’t right for her “big old voice,” as Randy Jackson said.

Even so, it was a nice touch when would spin around when singing the title lyrics.

Sanchez didn’t turn the diva antics on until the end of the song, where she presented herself like a raspier Beyonce. That was when the Jessica we know and love showed up. Post-performance, she admitted that there wasn’t much to choose from when it came to the 1995 song list.
