Lady Gaga Addresses Indonesia Concert Controversy

Lady Gaga finally tweeted about the religious opposition to her June 3 show in Jakarta in Indonesia, which was canceled despite being sold out to 52,000 little monsters. There is some hope that the show could go on.

The national police pulled the plug on the permit after an extremist Muslim group threatened violence, said it would cause chaos and planned to intercept Gaga upon arrival at the airport, claiming she was a threat to the nation’s morality. The local police could not guarantee her safety or that of fans so the show was axed.

She posted: “The Jakarta situation is 2-fold: Indonesian authorities demand I censor the show & religious extremist separately, are threatening violence.”

The Mother Monster then commented: “If the show does go on as scheduled, I will perform the BTWBall alone.” So it sounds like she may alter the show in accordance with the area’s standards so that she can entertain the little monsters dying to see her.

According to Ace Showbiz, the attorney for the Jakarta show promoter, Big Daddy Productions, promised that Gaga’s concert won’t go against Indonesian norms and cultural mores if they do get the go-ahead. The promoters did speak to Gaga and her team about the situation and discussed how to proceed.

Her Philippines gigs were protested by hardline Christians, who also felt her song ‘Judas’ was an affront to their faith, ignoring the fact that Gaga herself is Catholic. The group threatened to sue her if she performed the song. Those shows went on as planned, and Gaga posted a light-hearted tweet about that issue, writing: “And don’t worry, if I get thrown in jail in Manila, Beyonce will just bail me out. Sold out night 2 in the Philippines. I love it here!”

Besides that adorable “Beyonce to the rescue” comments, Gaga was so diplomatic in addressing the situation, letting the country and its people know that despite a vocal minority, she loves their region.
