Small business owners give Louisiana an A for its business friendliness, landing the state in the top 5 nationally.

According to Thumbtack's annual Small Business Friendliness Survey, nearly 18,000 U.S. small business owners responded to the survey, including 111 in Louisiana. The study asked respondents to rate their state and city governments across a broad range of policy factors. Thumbtack evaluated states and cities against one another in more than a dozen metrics.

"Small business owners on Thumbtack have consistently told us that they welcome support from their governments, but are frequently frustrated by unnecessary bureaucratic obstacles," said Thumbtack Chief Economist Jon Lieber in a news release. "In Louisiana, we've heard the state does a great job with entrepreneur-friendly regulations, and this year they saw a huge improvement in the quality of outreach from the state government."

Louisiana performed about the same in 2015 as it did in 2014, when it ranked #5 and earned a A overall. This year, we rank #4. Our state earned an A+ for its regulatory environment, which included licensing, tax, and labor rules, and an A for ease of starting a business. Louisiana's worst score was a B- for zoning regulations.

Neighboring Texas earned an overall friendliness score of A+ and ranked #1 nationally. After Texas were New Hampshire and Utah, and following Louisiana was Colorado.
