Man Who Survived Electrocution Thanks SFD for Saving His Life

Shreveport firefighters and paramedics got a special visit today from a 23-year-old man who survived electrocution.

Here's the sequence of events that happened to Nathaniel Johnson on June 23, 2014 at Querbes and 70th Street:

• Male electrocuted with high transmission line at 11:27AM
• Male unresponsive and not breathing
• Engine 3, only blocks away, is on-scene at 11:31AM
• CPR initiated at 11:32AM
• Mechanical CPR device activated at 11:30AM
• First manual defibrillation shock initiated at 11:30AM
• IV therapy started at 11:40AM
• Four additional manual defibrillation shocks given, but patient condition unchanged
• Additional IV therapy at 11:51AM, patient improves
• Sixth manual defibrillation shock given at 11:57AM, patient heart improves to Pulseless Electrical Activity
• CPR continued, patient arrives in University Health ER at 11:57AM with a pulse
• After induced hypothermia treatment at hospital, patient was awakened on July 4, 2014

"I don’t remember anything about that day. Doctors say I am a miracle," Johnson told first responders. "Thank y’all from the bottom of my heart."

Shreveport Fire Chief Scott Wolverton definitely had something to say about these amazing folks.

"This life saving EMS incident represents the professionalism and the highly-skilled training of our Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians and how God orchestrated them being in exactly the right place at exactly the right time to save Nathan's life," Wolverton said. "I want to personally express my gratitude to those professional firefighters that responded that day and I am proud and honored to work with them."
