Beyonce shocked the world (literally) with a surprise album release. Now Mariah Carey is opting for the same approach.

Mariah Carey is gearing up to release her fourteenth album, but the process hasn't gone smoothly. Carey has seen plenty of setbacks including her label, Island Def Jam, removing it from their release schedule. Originally the album was set to release on May 5 under the title The Art of Letting Go.

Although Carey says the album will be out soon, we now know that's all we'll hear from the "You're Mine (Eternal)" singer.

Carey is taking a page out of Beyonce's playbook and is planning a "surprise" release. Beyonce did the same thing in December 2013 with her self-titled album. The disc was released without an pre-warning and could only be downloaded in it's entirety.

The same goes for Carey. The album's new title, official track list and artwork will be revealed simultaneously via various digital partners. A physical release is set to follow the next week.

Carey told Billboard there will be a "special guest start that I'm not allowed to reveal."

Is this surprise release going to be the way of the future? Will other artists jump on board? We'll just have to wait and see.

Here's the music video for Cary's latest single, "You're Mine (Eternal)":
