Five years ago, Cirque du Soleil took the music of the Beatles and turned it into ‘Love,’ a smash multimedia hit that blended the troupe’s trademark dancing skill with state-of-the-art production and newly remixed versions of songs the world knows by heart. Now they’re doing it again with another beloved icon, Michael Jackson, and the result is ‘Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour.’

Already basking in the glow of warm reviews and sold-out sales, ‘The Immortal’ has spent the last couple of months wowing crowds across Canada and the United States, with stops booked through July 2012. But if you don’t live near one of the cities the show is scheduled to visit — or can’t see yourself parting with the price of a ticket — you can still catch a glimpse of the action with a recently released electronic press kit that takes viewers behind the scenes.

The clip also gives a taste of what listeners can expect from the ‘Immortal’ soundtrack album, which follows the model established by the ‘Love’ soundtrack by offering a remixed audio tour through its subject’s musical legacy. Not quite a greatest hits package, the ‘Immortal’ soundtrack intersperses spoken word passages with newly curated versions of hit tracks such as ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,’ ‘Smooth Criminal,’ and ‘Man in the Mirror.’

The soundtrack was supervised by musical director Kevin Antunes, who is interviewed in the press kit clip embedded below. Talking specifically about ‘Man in the Mirror,’ Antunes revealed the depth of his Jackson knowledge by talking about the way the vocals were recorded during the original sessions.

“When he’s singing you can hear him stomping and I know…they built this wooden platform for Michael to perform on,” Antunes recalled. “He wasn’t just coming to lay a vocal down. He would come and perform in the studio and you hear it. You hear it in the texture of his voice and he’d stomp and he’d have the headphones and you’d hear it all. And that stuff stayed on the records — if you listen closely to the records, it’s there.”
