Jesse Helt, who accompanied Miley Cyrus to the MTV Video Music Awards and accepted her award for Video of the Year, has been sentenced to six months in jail for violating probation, according to NBC News.

Helt was arrested in 2010 on misdemeanor charges, and then failed to meet with assigned probation officer or finish his required community service the following year.

The 22-year-old's lawyer, Whitney Boise, pleaded with the judge for leniency, saying that Helt "like to be viewed as a good person, not as a nuisance to society."

Judge Monte Campbell, however, obviously disagreed, cited continuing probation violations, therefore revoking his probation and sending him to jail.

After Helt accepted Cyrus' Video of the Year award for "Wrecking Ball", he delivered a moving speech recounting his life as a homeless person, and urged fans to get involved.

"My name is Jesse, and I'm accepting this award on behalf of 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth who are starving lost and scared right now," he told the crowd. "I know this because I am one of these people. I have survived in shelters all over this city…Though I may have been invisible to you on the streets I have a lot of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight."

Later, Cyrus tweeted, "People who are homeless have lived very hard lives, Jesse included. I hope that this can be the start of a national conversation about youth homelessness and how to end it."
