Earlier this week, George Miller was quoted as saying that he was done with the Mad Max franchise, which came as a shock to many, especially since Miller has done nothing but talk up Mad Max sequels since before Fury Road even hit theaters. But as several suspected, Page Six had their story wrong, which just goes to show that you should always take their reports with a GIANT boulder of salt.

The Wrap had a chance to speak with Miller about the Oscar nominations (10!) for Fury Road and to clear the air regarding that bizarre Page Six report. The director says the publication totally “garbled” his responses:

That was a completely garbled interview. I was in New York and it was so noisy and the journalist was asking me questions on a red carpet at the National Board of Review…She completely got the wrong fragments of information that were just not true. I said no, [another ‘Mad Max’ movie] will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another ‘Mad Max.’ It won’t necessarily be next, but I have two more stories.

Miller reiterates what he’s said for some time now: he’d like to make a smaller movie next before returning to the demanding world of Mad Max, but he does have two sequel stories in mind. Given the intense, lengthy production of Fury Road, it’s understandable that Miller might want to do something a little less exhaustive next. The director has said that he was inspired by Sean Baker’s indie hit Tangerine, which was shot entirely on an iPhone. And you know that when someone like George Miller says he wants to make a smaller film, he’s still planning on doing something brilliant.

As for Mad Max, it may be a few more years before we catch up with Tom Hardy’s Max and — hopefully — Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, but it will most certainly happen. Don’t believe everything you read.
