Most students at South Highlands Elementary Magnet School will not have written homework again this year.

Principal Mary Harris implemented the "No Homework" policy last year to give students more family time. But Harris tells us the policy has been tweaked just a bit for this school year. She says 4th and 5th graders will have a limited amount of math homework to practice the skills they learned at school. But there will be no written homework for K-3rd grade.

Harris says "our test scores were still excellent, so not having homework did not impact our achievement on state tests."  She says teachers do think the 4th and 5th graders needed a small amount of homework to get them ready for middle school.

South Highlands teachers will be requiring students to do some reading homework and they will also have to study for tests. But the rest of the work will be handled during the school day.

This homework policy is catching on in other parts of the country. In fact, in Marion County, Florida, "a no homework policy" is being implemented in all elementary schools. Teachers hope parents will replace the homework time with 20 minutes of reading time each evening.
