I was blessed to be raised, for a few years at least, by my grandfather.  Arthur Clyde was a heck of a guy.  He was about 20 feet tall, and could uproot trees with his bear hands if I remember correctly.  Most definitely the toughest, smartest, and kindest person ever.  That's him next to my grandmother on the left.  He was big into personal responsibility, and acting on his convictions - he joined the U.S. Air Force and served proudly in the Korean war.

He never really talked about his service much, but he always had a military way about him.  I still make my bed with military corners because of him and my father to this day.  Speaking of my father, I would be remiss to leave him out.  My dad, Robert Wade, served with distinction in the U.S. Army during the cold war, and still helps out Uncle Sam to this day on a more informal basis.  He really doesn't like his picture taken.  So, here's a blurry salute from my pops!

I know that Memorial Day is set aside for those who died in battle.  I don't want to dilute the memories of those for whom the holiday is reserved.  My grandfather is no longer with us, and he reminds me of all that is great about this country.  My dad is thankfully still here with us, I was extremely lucky that both of them made it home when many did not.  These are the heroes in my life that I choose to celebrate on every occasion possible.
