Bossier City police have teamed up with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commision this week to help keep kids safe. It's all part of National Child Passenger Safety Week, which runs September 14-20.

Additional officers will be out on the streets stepping up seat belt enforcement with an emphasis on watching out for motorists who fail to have children in proper safety restraints.

If you're unsure what type of seat your child requires, Bossier City spokesman Mark Natale has sent us Louisiana's child safety restraint law (Revised Statute 32:295):

·     A child who is younger than one year of age or weighs less than twenty pounds shall be restrained in a rear-facing child safety seat.

·     A child between the ages of one and four or who weighs at least twenty pounds but less than forty pounds shall be restrained in a forward-facing child safety seat.

·     A child between the ages of four and six and weighs at least forty pounds but not more than sixty pounds shall be restrained in a child booster seat.

·     A child who is at least six years of age or weighs more than sixty pounds shall be restrained with a safety belt or in an appropriately fitting child booster seat.

A child, who because of age or weight, can be placed in more than one of the above categories must be placed in the more protective category. For instance, a 4-year-old who weighs 50 pounds must be in a booster seat. The driver of a motor vehicle who fails to place a child passenger in the proper safety restraint can face fines of up to $100 for each offense.
