Yesterday's national EAS test has sparked lots of commentary as well as jokes. Was it a success? Was it a failure? I guess it depends on if you're a glass half full or half empty kind of person. It was a success in that it identified problem areas in the relay structure or daisy chain the EAS alerts, warnings and tests take. It could be seen as a failure in light of the fact, some areas didn't even receive the test alert. As in areas, I mean two whole states: Oregon and New Mexico. Others claim the audio was garbled with some experiencing double audio and still others had the test repeat multiple times. My favorite is what  happened on DirecTV... instead of the regular test audio, viewers got Lady Gaga's Paparazzi! As my mom commented last night, "What are you supposed to do in the event of a national emergency? Dance, apparently!" Locally, we received the test and it aired just fine. There were a few split second drop outs in audio and at times it was 'smushed' sounding, but overall, if something happens, it looks like the SBC will get the message. Keep in mind, this was the first ever national EAS test. Our regional system is working just fine, thank you. Either way, I hope we don't have to use the system for real... ever. Keep those Hollywood like asteroids to yourself!  For a good laugh, check out the new EAS Remix as well as clips from different news coverage the country over. Def check out the video around 3:25 to see DirecTV with Lady Gaga as entertainment during the national EAS Test.
