Neko Case Likens John Mayer’s Voice to ‘Baby Aspirin’ on Twitter

For a guy with a new No. 1 record out, John Mayer has been keeping a relatively low profile. His latest LP, ‘Born and Raised,’ contains some of his quietest, most laid-back work, and he’s been staying off the road to give his vocal cords time to heal following surgery. But that hasn’t kept him out of the crosshairs of celebrity controversy.

While ‘Born and Raised’ might be sitting pretty at the top of the charts, that doesn’t mean everyone likes it. In fact, Neko Case took to Twitter to deliver her own short review — not so much of the album per se, but of Mayer’s music in general: “Somebody get the cotton out of John Mayer’s mouth, he sings like a bottle of baby aspirin!”

This latest shot across Mayer’s bow comes a few days after he confessed to Rolling Stone that he took Taylor Swift‘s hit song ‘Dear John’ — rumored to be about the aftermath of their, ahem, collaboration — very personally. Saying he was “really humiliated” by the song, which contains lines like “Don’t you think 19 is too young to be played by your dark twisted games, when I loved you so,” Mayer insisted, “I didn’t deserve it. I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do.”

It surely stings for a sensitive soul like Mr. Mayer to endure such barbs from these talented women, but he can at least take solace in the fact that ‘Born and Raised’ has sold nearly 285,000 copies during its two weeks at the top of the charts. Take a listen to his latest single, ‘Shadow Days,’ and let us know what you think — does he really sing like a bottle of baby aspirin?
