Adam Levine, a coach on The Voice, isn’t happy with the way American Idol treats their gay contestants.

The first season of The Voice featured several gay contestants, including two that made the finals. But out of 10 seasons on Idol, there hasn’t been an openly gay singer on the show. Adam Lambert was urged by the show’s producers to keep his lifestyle under wraps until he left the show. And in an interview to Out magazine, Adam Levine expressed his anger that Idol is allowed to mask that aspect of the competition and get away with it. He says, ‘You can't be publicly gay?  On a singing competition? Give me a break. You can't hide basic components of these people's lives. The fact that The Voice didn't have any qualms about being completely open about it is a great thing.’

There is no proof that Idol steers clear of homosexuality besides their gay-free track record. They addressed the issue earlier this year, saying homosexuality is irrelevant to the competition and it is up to each contestant if they chose to reveal their sexual orientation.
