Next Season To Be The Last For “Weeds”

It's about to get really dry around the TV landscape as Showtime's "Weeds" wraps up its run after this season.

The series, whose eighth and final season kicks off July 1, follows suburban widow Nancy Botwin (played by Mary-Louise Parker) as she struggles to support her family by selling marijuana.

Showtime entertainment president David Nevins said, "'Weeds' has been a seminal series, which was key in establishing Showtime as a home for great original programming. It had a groundbreaking run. Entering its eighth season, it's one of the longest-running comedies in the history of cable. We all felt that it was the right time and right way to end it. It was very important to us that we bring the story of Nancy Botwin and her family to a satisfying conclusion for the devoted fans that have spent years supporting this series."

The series had been nominated for 20 Emmy Awards, including three for Parker for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy. It received an Emmy in 2009 for sound mixing and in 2010 for cinematography.
