Committing to safe driving pays off big for Parkway High School. The Panthers will be getting some big money next week -- $25,000 -- from State Farm.

Bossier Schools Liaison Sonja Bailes says in a news release that this is the second consecutive year Parkway has placed among the top 50 large schools across the nation in the "Celebrate My Drive" contest. The Panthers produced a student video encouraging teen motorists not to text and drive and to keep both eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel.

Daily votes were cast October 15-24 via social media, during U.S. National Teen Driver Safety Week. More than 3,200 high schools participated and more than 6-million safe driving commitments were made.

Celebrate My Drive is an effort by State Farm to raise awareness and get teens to think about and commit to safe driving practices. When Parkway placed in the contest last school year, the monetary award was used for things like parental and student Drivers Education "Point of Impact" meetings, and the creation of Drivers Ed videos and promotional incentives for the RIDE -- Rewarding Informed Drivers Everywhere -- program.

Funds were also used for purchasing projectors with motorized screens for the Auxiliary Gym, a sound system for the Cafe, a television in the library and outdoor picnic tables for student lunches.

This year's award will be handed over at 1 p.m. December 9 at a school assembly in the Auxiliary Gym.
