If you got one of the letters from the Office of Motor Vehicles, here's the phone # you need: 225 925-6146.

Residents all over the state are ticked off today about letters sent out by the State of Louisiana saying they owe money for a lapse in insurance. But the problem is, some of these alleged offenses happened up to 20 years ago.

The letter from OMV says you must pay fines of up to $525 for letting your insurance lapse.

Colonel Mike Edmonson with the Louisiana State Police tells KEEL News 1.2 million letters went out, and 25,000 of those came back undeliverable.

Edmonson says most of the cases are from 2006 until now, but some of the cases do date back as far as 20 years ago.

The letter says if you do not pay the amount you owe within 60 days, you will face a steep increase plus a collection fee of 25 percent.

Colonel Edmonson has ordered the phones at the Office of Motor Vehicle offices to be open until 8:00 p.m. to let people ask questions. The number to call is 225 925-6146.
