PHS Donates Two Speed Monitors to Bossier Sheriff’s Office

The Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office is now the proud owner of two new speed monitors, thanks to Parkway High School.

The school won $100,000 in State Farm's Celebrate My Drive contest, and decided to buy the monitors, which cost more than $13,000 each, to ensure safety in school zones and throughout the parish.

Sheriff Julian Whittington said he's pleased to have the new equipment. He said the goal is to encourage motorists to slow down and be mindful of speed limits.

The BSO showed off the new equipment at a news conference this morning, attended by PHS students and new Principal Waylon Bates, State Farm officials, school resource officers and other sheriff's deputies.

Parkway senior Colin Thigpen explained that car crashes are the leading cause of teen fatalities, and the new monitors will be a reminder to students, teachers and other motorists to drive safely. He said other initiatives are also planned for the Celebrate My Drive grant money that will help ensure everyone's buckled up behind the wheel.
