IndyCar driver Justin Wilson has died after suffering a severe head injury during Sunday's race at Pocono Raceway.

The 37-year-old died at nearby Lehigh Valley Health Network where he was airlifted immediately following the crash, which occurred during the closing laps of the race when the race's leader, Sage Karam, spun out, causing debris to fly out from his car, causing Wilson to spin out of control and crash into the inside wall head-on.

Karam sustained injuries to his right heel and left wrist. He later tweeted, "I can't find the proper words to describe the pain and sympathy I feel for Justin and his family."

Hulman & Company (owner of IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway) CEO Mark Miles issued the following statement: "This is a monumentally sad day for IndyCar and the motorsports community as a whole."

He added, "Justin's elite ability to drive a race car was matched by his unwavering kindness, character and humility—which is what made him one of the most respected members of the paddock. As we know, the racing industry is one big family, and our efforts moving forward will be focused on rallying around Justin's family to ensure they get the support they need during this unbelievably difficult time."

Wilson's family has requested that donations be made to the Wilson's Children's Fund, care of IndyCar.
