Rihanna Doesn’t Get Why Chris Brown Collabs Were Controversial

Rihanna Esquire UK

Rihanna is proving to be quite a controversy magnet. In her Esquire cover story, on which she appears sexy and topless, the ‘Where Have You Been’ singer gets visibly irritated at the interviewer for probing her about the Chris Brown remixes.

In pulled quotes via Hollywood Gossip, RiRi suggests she has no idea why it was such a big deal to work with Breezy, given their history. She resorts to calling the interview “tacky” and challenges the writer to talk about subjects her fans care about. As if they don’t care about her making music with her notorious ex?

The writer asks if the recording session was the first time she had seen Breezy in quite some time, to which she replies, “When would we have seen each other? We’ve both been working and touring.” That was snippy, no? She admits the negative reaction surprised her, saying, “The whole thing caught me a little off-guard to be honest… especially the amount of… negative attention. Because it never occurred to me how this was going to be a problem, you know. It really didn’t.”

RiRi continued, “I thought people were gonna be surprised that we finally did a record together, but I didn’t see how people could think it was a bad thing, you know? In my mind, it was just music.”

The writer then says that the collab sent the wrong message, since she got back together with a man who put her in the hospital after the famous Grammy beating. She angrily asked, “Oh really? Did I?”

She justified that it was “in a completely professional environment. And on a complete professional note. I mean, if I went back to him [as a girlfriend], then that’s a whole different discussion. And if I ever do, then that’s something that y’all have to talk to me about when – if – that ever happens. Until then, look at it for what it is. I think a lot of people jumped to an assumption that was incorrect and they ended up looking stupid.”

Notice she mentions “when and if” they get back together, which should set off a storm of “Are they or aren’t they, will they or won’t they” rumors.

Ri also says that her song ‘Birthday Cake’ had overtly sexual tones BEFORE Breezy participated, closing the discussion by saying, “I could never see anything wrong with making music.”

Come on, Rihanna. You really didn’t think people would be in an uproar over the Breezy collabs? We’re not saying it’s right for them to be all up in ya bidness, but to think fans wouldn’t “ooh” and “aah” is naive.
