Rihanna Says She Makes Clothes for ‘Fat Days,’ Is Selfish When Designing for River Island [Video]

Rihanna isn’t just lending her name and her aesthetic to her River Island collections. In this behind-the-scenes video, featuring the pop diva fingering the fabric and trying on and modeling garments for her second range for the brand, she is hands on in the process. She admits to being selfish about designing, keeping herself in mind so that she has clothes for “fat days.”

Towards the end of the video, she talks about why she made a foray into design, saying, “I wanted stuff I want to wear…at the end of the day, that’s what got me into designing, seeing things on the rack that were great, but it could been a little more me or fit me a little better. Or be a little longer or a little shorter or have a little more sex appeal or a little less sex appeal…I needed to make clothes for fat days that I have. I wanted to make stuff I want to wear. I was being selfish.”

Let’s dissect for a second. It’s obvious that her aesthetic and clothes preferences factor prominently into her first River Island collection. The items looked like their DNA was replicated from Ri’s walk-in closet. And don’t freak out over her “fat” comments. She isn’t perfect and likely meant that she wanted clothes with a little give for when she’s bloated. She wasn’t single-handedly destroying the self-esteem or fashionable aspirations of curvy women everywhere.

Regardless of her comments, she jumps up and down like a giddy little kid in a candy store when she signs off on garments for the summer range.

RiRi doesn’t hide her opinions. She wants her looks to be gangsta and rock ‘n’ roll, and she isn’t afraid to ask that the hood of a jacket be made a bit stiffer. Yeah, that’s what she said.

Seriously, though, this is a fashionista who knows what she wants when it comes to the clothes.

RiRi said she made a piece for everyone in her crew, since the people she consorts with have different style and tastes, and she took that approach so that the line would appeal to all the women out there who care about what they wear. So she had you in mind, RiRi Navy members and River Island customers.

We applaud RiRi for not just slapping her name on the pre-fab clothes and promoting them. She is clearly a part of this process. And if you like her style, who cares that she was being selfish?
