Centenary College has teamed up with Captain Shreve High School to bring William Shakespeare's classic tragedy "Rome And Juliet" to the modern day, and it works!

I was able to view their final dress rehearsal last night, and I was extremely impressed with these young people. They were able to convey the story very well, even to those of us who may not be able to wrap our heads around iambic pentameter.

Now, I was watching a rehearsal, so there were still a couple of stumbles here and there, and the high schoolers involved seemed a bit nervous performing this in front of an audience, small that it was. There were a few that had a little issue with the wordiness that Shakespeare brings, but all in all Captain Shreve has an impressive group of young thespians that, through Heather Hooper's amazing tutelage, should become fine actors should they choose to pursue it.

The older cast, made up of Centenary students, was spot on. The leads were interesting and dimensional, and their band of friends on both sides were also well played. There are some fairly complicated fight scenes in the show, and a lot of knife play, all of it well choreographed.

Technically speaking, it's a very striking play to watch. The set is sparse and industrial, and the lighting transitions between scenes are breathtaking! Check out some of the pictures below!

If you like Shakespeare, or just a good tragic love story, check out Centenary and Captain Shreve's "Romeo And Juliet" at the Marjorie Lyons Playhouse. All tickets are $5.00. Performance dates and times are Nov. 10-12 and 17-19 all at 7:30. There will be a 2:00 matinee performance Sunday, Nov. 13th.
