"Reflecting on the past six years since we started on X-Factor, we've realized just how far we've come and we appreciate everything so much, more now than ever," the girls tweeted. "We've really had one hell of a memorable journey together and can't begin to express our gratitude to y'all for coming along with us on this wild ride!"

The ladies added they plan to "grow creatively and really find our footing as individuals. In doing this we are allowing ourselves to gain new experiences, strengths and perspectives that we can bring back to our Fifth Harmony family."

Unsurprisingly, fans took to Twitter to express their gratitude for the girl group and sorrow about the hiatus. One such fan was Sam Smith. The 25-year-old Grammy winner is a known Harmonizer, and he was devastated to hear the news.

He took to Twitter to grieve. “FIFTH HARMONY!!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” he wrote.

Last year, James Corden made Smith's collaboration dreams come true by surprising him with 5H during his appearance on Carpool Karaoke.

“I feel free, I feel alive. I feel the woman in me is on fire,” Smith said about the girl group's music before the four girls get in the car. “‘Work From Home’ is my wedding song. I want to walk down to it in heels. I’m obsessed with them.”
