Sam Smith was the big winner Sunday at the 57th annual Grammys held in Los Angeles with four gold statuettes.

The singer took home the awards for best new artist, song of the year and record of the year for "Stay With Me", and best pop vocal album for In the Lonely Hour.

"Before I made this record I was doing everything to try and get my music heard," Smith said in one of his acceptance speeches. "I tried to lose weight and I was making awful music. It was only until I started to be myself that the music started to flow and people started to listen."

Another winner was Beck, who won in the album of the year, best rock album and best engineered non-classical album for Morning Phase. Beck beat out Beyonce in the album of the year category, prompting Kanye West to fake joining him onstage, a callback to the Taylor Swift incident from a few years ago.

Bey didn't go home empty-handed, however; she took home statuettes for best surround-sound album and best R&B song and performance for Drunk in Love.

Other winners included Pharrell Williams, who won best solo pop performance for Happy, and Miranda Lambert for best country album (Platinum).

Performance highlights included AC/DC, who kicked things off with a medley of their current hit, Rock or Bust, and their classic Highway to Hell, a duet by Jessie J and Tom Jones, who performed You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin', and Ed Sheeran, who shared the stage with Jeff Lynne and ELO for a rendition of the band's Mr. Blue Sky.
