In a year that's seen the deaths of several music legends and the election of former reality star Donald Trump to the highest office in the United States, EDM-bro duo The Chainsmokers offered America a song that Top 40 listeners can't get enough of: runny electro bop "Closer," in which singer Halsey and Chainsmoker Andrew Taggart portray exes facing middle class material struggle ("your Rover that I know you can't afford," a somehow-stolen mattress) who find comfort in universally appealing fantasies of eternal youth ("we are never getting older"). Modern Family star Sarah Hyland, like so many, loves "Closer" too, and joined rock band Boyce Avenue for a cover of the hit.

Boyce Avenue vocalist Alejandro Manzano takes on Taggart's role in the performance below, while Hyland channels her inner Halsey. Hyland's Modern Family costars aren't surprised by the Haley Dunphy portrayer's foray into music, as Eric Stonestreet tweeted,  "We've heard Sarah Hyland's singing talent in the makeup trailer for almost 8 years."

And it's not Hyland's first collaboration with Boyce Avenue, either: They teamed up for a cover of Maroon 5's "Don't Wanna Know" — and you can own both that and their "Closer" version on their Cover Collaborations Vol. 4 EP
