As if it the movie Jaws didn’t already scare us enough to go out into shark-infested waters, this weekend’s events has us second-guessing if we should ever go into an ocean again!

Mick Fanning was out in South Africa’s Jeffreys Bay on Sunday getting ready for the start of the final round of the J-Bay Open when he was attacked by not just one, but TWO great white sharks!

Fortunately for Mick, he was able to escape the attack with no injuries. The only thing damaged was the leash that tethers him to his surf board. Fanning and the other finalist, Julian Wilson, as well as a reporter who was out there for color commentary, were immediately pulled out of the water by rescue watercraft and put on a safety boat.

Mick was asked by the reporter, moments after reaching the safety boat, if he got in a punch or two. Apparently, Mick fought back, saying, “I punched it in the back, yeah!”

Because of sharks in the area, the World Surf League, which organized the event, called off remainder of the event for safety reasons.

The WSL released an official statement after canceling of the event:

We are incredibly grateful that no one was seriously injured today. Mick’s composure and quick acting in the face of a terrifying situation was nothing short of heroic and the rapid response of our Water Safety personnel was commendable — they are truly world class at what they do.

The safety of our athletes is a priority for the WSL and, after discussions with both Finalists, we have decided to cancel the remainder of competition at the J-Bay Open. We appreciate the ongoing support we have in South Africa and once again want to express our gratitude to the Water Safety Team.”

Both finalists agreed to accept second place in the event and split the prize money since it was deemed too dangerous to continue.
