Yeah, it caught my attention, too! That's why I just had to open the email, although the name doesn't allude to a risque event, the SlutWalk is actually about women standing up and refusing to go along with the 'blame the victim' mentality that so often arises with regards to sexual violence.

Shreveport's SlutWalk is this Saturday, October 12th and will take place at Media Star Entertainment in Shreveport. The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to defray costs.

SlutWalk EVENT: Shreveport

October 12, 2013
Time: 3:00- 7:00
Where: Media Star Entertainment: 1262 Dalzell Street, Shreveport

Inspired by the original SlutWalk, held in Toronto on April 3, 2011, and by the wave of SlutWalk events that has enveloped the world (250 cities over six continents), we, the women and men of Shreveport, will hold our first annual event on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations accepted to defray event production costs.

SlutWalk was born as a protest, a protest from women who have long tired of the “blame the victim” mentality perpetuated by society, law enforcement, and civic authorities. Sexual violence is always a crime, and the victims of assault are never at fault.

This event is not a march as many have been, rather it is a static exhibit of art, performance and testimony by members of the Shreveport-area community. Ian Quiet, AJ Haynes, and Alexandra McCullough are taking the stage in support and solidarity while many local artists display their powerful works in the hall. Additionally, we will have available information from support agencies such as the Center for Families, LAFASA, and Philadelphia Center.

It is vital to establishing meaningful public discourse regarding sexual assault to understand that victims can be men or women, of all ages, races, sexual orientations, and socio-economic backgrounds. Additionally, the act of rape represents a broad range of “types” of sexual assault, and many victims whose sexual assault meets the legal definition of rape do not think of themselves as rape survivors. It is our hope that, beginning with this event, the women and men of Shreveport, along with the city government, officials, and local law enforcement, can begin a serious and effective fight against sexual violence.
